She began her directing career through American Film Institute's Directing Workshop for Women; her first (short) film "Tales of Meeting and Parting" was nominated for an Academy Award in 1984. She was the president of the Directors Guild of America from September 2021 until September 2025, when she was succeeded by Christopher Nolan.
